Clayworks Wall Finish

Lime Wash

Soft, Breathable Color with Old-World Depth

At Venetian Works, lime wash is one of our most-loved finishes — a natural, lime-based coating that gives walls a soft, matte, cloud-like depth you simply can't get from paint. Brushed on in layers, it shifts subtly with the light and develops a living patina over time. Our European-trained artisans apply lime wash for homes, designers and commercial spaces across New York City, the Hudson Valley and the tri-state area, turning ordinary walls into something with real character and history.

WHY Lime Wash?

Lime wash is made from slaked lime, water and natural pigments — a finish that's been used for centuries and is enjoying a strong comeback in modern interiors. Unlike flat paint, it's applied in thin, brushed layers that create gentle movement and tonal variation across the surface. The result is a chalky, matte finish with quiet depth that feels warm and organic. It's breathable, so it lets moisture pass through rather than trapping it, naturally mold- and bacteria-resistant, low in VOCs, and environmentally friendly. As it ages, lime wash mellows and softens, giving your walls a timeless, lived-in beauty.

Where Lime Wash Works Best

Lime wash suits both interior and exterior surfaces and pairs beautifully with modern, rustic, Mediterranean and farmhouse styles. We apply it to:

  • Living room, bedroom and hallway feature walls

  • Whole-room interiors for a soft, enveloping color

  • Ceilings, for subtle overhead depth

  • Fireplaces and chimney breasts

  • Exterior facades, garden walls and masonry

  • Brick, stone and existing plaster surfaces

  • Commercial and hospitality spaces — restaurants, boutiques, hotels and studios

Lime wash bonds especially well with porous, mineral surfaces like brick, stone and traditional plaster, making it ideal for both period properties and new builds.

Our Process

  • Surface preparation: We assess and prepare the surface, applying the right primer or mineral base so the lime wash adheres and cures correctly.

  • Color matching: We mix and sample pigments so you approve the exact tone and depth before we begin.

  • Layered application: We brush on multiple thin coats by hand, building the soft movement and variation that makes lime wash unique.

  • Curing & finishing: The lime cures naturally, deepening into its final color. We can seal exterior or high-use areas for added durability.

Finishes & Colors

  • Lime wash is available in a full range of natural, earthy tones — warm whites, soft greys, taupes, terracottas, ochres, deep clays and moody charcoals. The brushed application gives every wall gentle cloud-like movement, from a subtle whisper of texture to a more dramatic, weathered look. We can custom-match colors to your scheme and can adjust the intensity to suit the room and the light it gets.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is lime wash different from paint?
Yes. Paint sits on top of the wall as a flat, uniform film. Lime wash soaks in and is built up in brushed layers, creating a breathable, matte finish with natural movement and depth that paint can't replicate.

  • Can lime wash be used outside?
Absolutely. Lime wash is excellent on exterior masonry, brick and stone, and is traditionally used on facades. We adjust the build and can seal it for weather resistance.

  • Can you match a specific color?
Almost always. We prepare custom pigment samples for your approval before starting, so the finished walls are exactly the tone and depth you want.

  • How do I care for lime wash walls?
Lime wash is low-maintenance and ages beautifully. Interior walls need little more than gentle dusting; we can apply a sealer in kitchens, bathrooms or high-traffic areas for easier cleaning.
